CHARGES: Maplewood man shot son over cable TV dispute

MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (KMSP) -

An 84-year-old Maplewood, Minn. has been charged with second-degree murder after fatally shooting his son after an apparent cable television payment dispute.

Maplewood police said 84-year old Pang Vang shot and killed his son, Chue Vang, during an argument at the family's home in the 1800 block of County Road B on March 24.

According to charges, police responded to a report that a man had been shot and the suspect was locked in a room inside the home.

Pang Vang's wife, the victim's mother, informed his older brother that Vang had shot his brother, who was bleeding and apparently dead in the hallway. Vang exited the bedroom with a shotgun and his son wrestled it away from him. The gun fired into the ceiling during the struggle and Vang returned to the bedroom and closed the door.

The Ramsey County SWAT team found Vang in the bedroom with blood on his chest, stomach and neck and brought him to Regions Hospital.

Vang's wife told police her son had recently purchased the home and she and her husband lived there with other family members. She said her husband was on the phone with the family's pastor when her son told Vang if he had any worries, he should discuss it with his sons. Vang said, "I'm not talking with you kids," and returned to his room. She then heard gunfire after her son confronted his father in the room.

Later, she asked Vang why he killed her son, and he responded, "If you are not afraid of dying, then come in and bother me. If you are afraid of dying, then you better run away."

Vang's pastor confirmed he had spoken with him shortly before the shooting and said Vang was upset his son wouldn't pay to install cable television in the house.
