Pearson Candy begins a bit of a sweet production

Posted: Updated:

Employees, the Pearson family and a 94-year old super fan celebrated a sweet addition Wednesday morning as the Pearson Candy Company celebrated the first batch of Bit-O-Honey candy as it came off the production line.

"It's got a great name, a great reputation probably behind the Nut Roll and the Nut Goodie, it's my favorite candy bar," said Steve Pearson. "I didn't like to say that when it wasn't a Pearson, but now I can say it and admit to it."

Pearson Candy purchased Bit-O-Honey from Nestle eight months ago and the transfer of equipment and a new process has been fast moving. The Bit O' Honey brand has been around for 90 years and the move to Minnesota came with the help of a forgivable loan from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) and its Minnesota Investment Fund.

Bit-O-Honey fan Elsie Syverson cut the ribbon and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman praised the local company for adding 40 jobs as part of the expansion.

Syverson says she became a bit of a Bit-O-Honey fan years ago when she shopped at Cub Foods for groceries.

"The flavor I guess," Syverson said. "I just like them. You can put them in your pocket or your purse and share them with somebody else."

Pearson Candy Company's move of Bit-O-Honey is part of its long term plan to grow the company both in Minnesota and outside of the Midwest.
