Baby on Last Breath Saved by LAPD Officers

Posted: Updated:

Charmaine Gooden walked into the police station with 17 month Javon in her arms.  He'd just been released from the hospital.  But before they went home, Charmaine had a mission to thank the LAPD officers who saved her baby's life.

Saturday afternoon, she was running errands.  "Something told me to look in my back.. and that's what I did .. and I saw him.. his eyes were rolled in the back of his head.. looking out the window and his eyes were blinking."  She choked back tears remembering that moment and remembering her panic on what to do next.

Then, she saw an LAPD police car.  She started honking her horn and followed them.  Inside, the car, Officers Andy Cardenas and Johnny Han.  At first, they didn't realize what the honking horn meant, but when they saw the car behind them, they stopped.  Charmaine yelled out her window that her baby wasn't breathing and she needed help.

The officers told her to move over to the left shoulder and then raced to her car to see what was going on.

Officer Johnny Han said, "We noticed that the baby was in the back seat in a car seat and the baby wasn't breathing. "   Officer Andy Cardenas added, "When I opened the door, he was motionless.. so I figured I'd give him a slight chest compression. Once I did that he started to move.. like very slightly."

Cardenas kept the baby's head tilted back to aid his breathing.  Han called for an ambulance and tried to get information from the panicky mom.

Before long, the mom and baby were on their way to the hospital and the two officers continued their regular duty.   They didn't even know the baby's name.   But a sergeant went to the hospital to check on Javon.  Doctors told him, that what the police officers did most likely saved the boy's life.

Doctors said the same to Charmaine.  Her eyes welled up and her voice cracked with emotion. "So.. if I hadn't seen them turn that corner .. I don't know what I would have did (sic) I would have been driving around with a deceased baby.   Instead, Javon is home after three nights in the hospital.
