Homeowners shooting intruders: Are the killings justified?

Posted: Updated:
WJBK - Many are applauding a Detroit homeowner's actions after two suspected home intruders were fatally shot Tuesday. The shooting is one of many recent examples of homeowners using a deadly force against would-be intruders. So what do Detroit police have to say about it all?

Police Chief James Craig wanted to be clear he does not support vigilante justice, but he does support good people protecting their homes.

"Detroiters have had it. Chief Craig has often said good Americans that are legally in possession of firearms are defending their homes, and they have the right to do that, and we stand behind them in doing so," says Sgt. Michael Woody.

Still, some people say the chief is being irresponsible by encouraging untrained citizens to act as police and it's only a matter of time before someone makes a mistake.

"Police officers have numerous hours of training to determine when to shoot and when not to shoot. We need to find out how to organize our communities not necessarily just react," says Ron Scott of the Coalition Against Police Brutality. "Certainly I'm not foolish enough to say don't defend yourself, but you have a lot of ground to cover before you get to lethal force."

"I'm not encouraging it, but when are we going to discourage the thugs from stopping the violence? When are we going to do that?" says Craig.
