Mich. microbrewies can now double their amount of brews

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) - Gov. Rick Snyder has signed legislation that doubles the production cap for microbreweries.

A bipartisan nine-bill package signed Tuesday lets microbrewers produce 60,000 barrels of beer a year, up from the current 30,000 barrel limit.

Startup craft brewers are allowed limited self-distribution under the new law.

House Bill 4709 has changed the definition of a micro brewer. Now, a micro brewer is a brewer that produces less than 60,000 barrels per year.

The change is expected to increase revenue to the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs and State General Fund.

Under current law, micro brewer license holders pay a $50 annual fee for the first 15,000 barrels produced. An additional $50 is paid for every 1,000 barrels produced thereafter.

The maximum annual fee was $800 for a microbrewery that produced 30,000 barrels. The new maximum annual fee is now $2,300 for a microbrewery that produces 60,000 barrels.

As of June 2013, 92 micro brewer licenses were active in the state of Michigan.

The city of Detroit says workers and retirees have approved pension cuts, a crucial step to emerging from the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. The city reported results Monday after two months of balloting ended July 11. A judge still must hold a trial to determine if Detroit's overall bankruptcy plan is fair and feasible, but support from retirees is vital.
