Police: Heroin addict stabs store guard with dirty syringe

ROSEVILLE, Mich. (WJBK) - Police say a heroin addict trying to shoplift from a home improvement store in suburban Detroit repeatedly stabbed a guard with a used syringe.

Joshua Silva, 26, of Eastpointe is believed to have been stealing a drill from the Home Depot at 13 Mile and Little Mack roads when two loss prevention agents approached him.

Instead of cooperating, police say, Silva began to attack and repeatedly stab one of the agents with a contaminated needle.

Police say a customer with a concealed firearm permit pulled out a gun and ordered Silva to stop the attack. Silva is said to have complied.

However, when he heard police sirens, Silva began to run off but was apprehended and arrested by Roseville police officers.

Silva has been charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm and retail fraud. A judge set his bond at $25,000.

The court also ordered Silva to have his blood tested, along with the syringe used in the attack to see if any disease could possibly be passed onto the loss prevention agent.

Roseville Police Chief James Berlin tells FOX 2's Robin Murdoch he was once exposed to Hepatitis B from a drug addicted suspect. He says the symptoms did not show for six months but then he spent 23 days in the hospital recovering.

"Unfortunately, some of these diseases can incubate in the body for months. So, he'll need additional blood draws over the next several months to make sure nothing is appearing in the near future. So, it's a very long and arduous wait for him and obviously very emotional as you go up and down from this disease you may have contracted," Berlin says.

Silva is due in court April 2.

The loss prevention agent has been treated and released from a local hospital.
