NICE MOVES: What women want on the dance floor

Posted: Updated:

Science has figured out what women want on the dance floor.

A group of evolutionary biologists from Northumbria University and the University of Gottingen wanted to know what women look for in a dance partner, and isolated specific areas of the body to reveal just what tricks men should pull to catch a lady's eye.

Researchers recruited 30 men to dance to a core drum beat for 30 seconds, the routine was later animated as a "featureless, gender-neutral" avatar. Then, 37 women were asked to rate that avatar's performance on a 7-point scale.

GOOD MOVES/BAD MOVES

In the video above, the first 10 seconds depict "good" dance moves, while the next sequence depicts "bad" dance moves.

Central body: Larger and more variable movements of the head, neck and torso

Legs: Speed of leg movements – bending and twisting of the right knee in particular (apparently there's something to that two left feet adage?)

Arms: Researchers found no relation between arm movement and dancing ability.
