MONTGOMERY, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 2-year-old boy who was pulled from a retention pond Monday afternoon near west suburban Montgomery died from near drowning and hypothermia, an autopsy found.

The boy was identified as Mohamed Qattum, of the 200 block of Fernwood Road in Montgomery, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.

Kendall County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call of a missing boy about 12:15 p.m. Monday in the 200 block of Fernwood Road in an unincorporated area near Montgomery, a statement from the sheriff's office said.

Mohamed apparently walked away from his mother and other siblings, and fell into a nearby retention pond, which was partially iced-over, sheriff's police said Tuesday.

Deputies and officers from nearby police departments found the boy and were able to pull him from the water, the statement said.

He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood and was later pronounced dead at 2:06 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said.

An autopsy Friday found Mohamed died of near drowning and hypothermia, and his death was ruled an accident, the medical examiner's office said.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating allegations of neglect against Mohamed's mother and father, according to spokeswoman Karen Hawkins.

The department has had no prior reports involving the family, and the boy's siblings are staying with relatives under a DCFS-monitored safety plan, Hawkins said.

No foul play is suspected as the Kendall County Sheriff's office investigates.
