VIDEO: Mendota Bridge crash involved 61 vehicles

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. (KMSP) -

A crash involving 61 vehicles shut down westbound lanes of the Highway 55 Mendota Bridge early Monday afternoon.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the pileup was triggered just before 1 p.m. by two cars that lost control and crashed, causing a semi to jackknife.

"When you look at why this happened, it's because people are driving too fast, following too close, and not being prepared to stop," Lt. Eric Roeske said.

One person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The crash was cleared and all lanes were reopened by 3 p.m.

Uncensored video of the crash was posted on Facebook by real estate agent Joe Mueller, with the description, "Most intense thing of my life. No major injuries to anyone. Praise god."

Mueller can be heard in the video ushering drivers to the other side of a concrete barrier as more vehicles approached the scene. 

Westbound Highway 55 was closed for several hours as crews cleared all the crashed vehicles from the roadway.
