Police Arrest Multiple Suspects Involved In Temple Campus Attack

Posted:
NORTH PHILADELPHIA -

Police have arrested five female suspects between the ages of 14-17 for three violent attacks involving Temple University students Friday night.

FOX 29's Dave Kinchen says at least two suspects turned themselves in after seeing themselves on TV from surveillance video.  The others suspects were recognized by high schools.

A witness told police that the women tried to start a "flash mob" moments before the attacks. All of this  happened moments before a 19-year-old student was hit with a brick. Two other female Temple students were later punched.

On March 21 at 6:00pm, a 19-year-old woman and her boyfriend were walking on the 1600 block of Norris Street. When they came to the intersection of 17th and Norris Streets, they were approached by a large group of unknown females.

Police say one of the female suspects then struck the woman in the face with a brick causing extensive damage while the other females attempted to rob the woman's boyfriend.

The suspects fled the area and were last seen boarding a SEPTA bus traveling south on 17th Street.

The woman was transported to Hahnemann Hospital where she was treated for dislocated teeth and other facial injuries.

Temple University's website says its alerts cover on campus emergencies requiring immediate action. The schools advisories cover on or near campus events that aren't as urgent.

Students tell us they want more consistency and will feel better with more information.

Temple University Junior Jon Forstater says he walks by the spot near campus where the female student was assaulted with a brick Friday evening.

He says the university usually keeps him informed about violent incidents on or near campus but not this time.

"If there's dangerous things happening on campus it would be nice to know about them, even if it's not directly on campus but in the area," said Forstater.

One 15-year-old female will be charged with aggravated assault. Philadelphia Police are still looking for two more suspects in this crime. If you have information about this case, please contact Central Detectives at 215-686-3093.
