WINTER OUTLOOK: Few flakes possible Monday

We are now entering the last week of March and we are still talking about snow. But, it isn't all that unusual considering snow season technically goes through the month of April. In fact, our latest snowfall ever was May 28th. But regardless, I'm sure this is the last discussion you want to be having right now, but I do have some good news. This storm will be very weak and may not even produce accumulating snow for a lot of us. Those that do happen to get some snow will only have to deal with an inch or two… just enough to whiten the place up a bit.

This storm appears to be targeting mostly southern and central Minnesota, but our computer models haven't exactly agreed on the track of this storm. Some throw most of the snow in Iowa; others take the heaviest snow through the Minnesota River Valley, while others still take more of a dotted approach by spitting out only scattered pockets of an inch or two. So here are 3 different models that show 3 pretty different ideas on where this storm will end up.

The good news about all of these solutions is that overall snow totals are very light, ending up with a couple inches, 3 at most. Temperatures will also be warm enough where road conditions will be slushy, sloppy, and wet versus snowy and icy… which is a BIG benefit to getting snow this late in the season. So which of these models is right? Well, honestly, who knows, it may even end up being a blend of a couple of them. So, therefore we can use the Weather Prediction Center to determine our probability of getting some accumulation. The following is their forecasting the probability of getting at least 2 inches of snow from late Sunday night through Monday night.

According to the WPC, the probability is actually pretty high across parts of southern Minnesota with places like Austin and Albert Lea at 70%+. The metro appears to be on the fringe of some of the accumulating snow with a 40% to 60% chance of getting at least 2" of snow. As always though, these predictions will fluctuate a bit, but overall, I would expect to see some flakes on Monday.
