Barkhad Abdi to help MNsure court 'young invincibles'

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Minnesota Oscar nominee Barkhad Abdi of "Captain Phillips" is helping MNsure with its campaign to get people ages 26 to 34 to sign up for health insurance before the March 31 deadline.

Abdi as his co-star, Faysal Ahmed, will sign autographs at the Brian Coyle Community Center in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood on Friday and steer people to tables where MNsure navigators can sign them up for health coverage.

MNsure said over 128,000 Minnesotans have enrolled in health insurance coverage through MNsure while 16% of Qualified Health Plan enrollments are from what they call the "young invincible" group of 26 – 34 year olds.

Abdi and Ahmed also will target that younger audience through TV, radio and YouTube ads suggesting they get covered.

In the coming days, MNsure will bolster their social media presence, head to college campuses and host happy hours with navigators and brokers at local bars in the Twin Cities.

The Affordable Care Act dictates those that don't have health insurance by March 31 could face monetary penalties – the larger of either $95 or 1 percent of household income. The next open enrollment period begins November 15, 2014.
