Police ID carjacking suspect fatally shot in downtown Phoenix

Phoenix police identified 26-year-old Craig Uran as the suspect who led officers on a chase and was ultimately shot and killed.

The shooting happened next to Cityscape shopping area, right across from the county courthouse.

Dozens of witnesses saw the chase and shooting in one of the busiest spots in downtown Phoenix.

"It was like something out of a movie it was crazy," said Angie Philips.

Phoenix Police say this all began earlier in the morning after officer spotted a stolen silver Dodge Ram pick-up in a hotel parking lot near I-17 and Dunlap.

Police say Uran pointed a handgun at a detective before accelerating and losing him in a neighborhood.

A police helicopter followed the car downtown.

In an attempt to get away, the suspect pulled into Cityscape's underground parking lot.

"The first thing I saw was this truck speeding go down under the garage almost hit cars and the police," said Philips.

Inside the garage, police say the suspect and a woman he was with carjacked an attorney.

"Unbeknownst to them, when she was removed from the vehicle she had taken the keys with her. She began to run off and was recaptured by the male suspect, thrown to the ground, and her keys were taken from her,"  said Phoenix Police Sergeant Trent Crump.

But police were still close behind and as soon as the suspect pulled out of the parking lot onto Jefferson, he was stopped by a massive armored vehicle known as a Bearcat.

"It was really traumatic, something you don't normally see here in downtown here," said Daniel Hynes.

Other officers tried to pin the SUV against a building, but the driver was able to keep going.

"One of our officers has indicated that he saw the suspect vehicle heading in the direction of between 3 and 5 pedestrian that were walking on the sidewalk," said Sgt. Crump.

Amateur video shows the SWAT team moving in, and when Uran allegedly continued to try to get away, an officer fired and struck him.

Uran was pronounced dead at the scene.

"We had just come out of the courthouse when we saw this, and they said duck, duck, duck, and we didn't know whether to duck or take off running," said Frank Gibb.

Police arrested 23-year-old Jessica Hicks, who was with suspect in the SUV.

Hicks was booked into the 4th Avenue Jail on charges of murder and robbery.

One officer had his foot ran-over during the incident, he was taken to a hospital and treated for non life threatening injuries.
