A Colorado community is devastated to learn a woman made up an elaborate lie about her young son having cancer.
Police arrested Sandy Nguyen after they say she tricked her son into thinking he had cancer then duped the community out of thousands of dollars in donations.
Faculty at Rolling Hills Elementary School say they're going through a whirlwind of emotions wondering how a person can make up such a heinous lie.
"The child's teacher in particular has been going through a roller coaster of emotions. Relief that the child is okay and then a terrible sense of betrayal around what has happened," School District Spokeswoman Tustin Amole said.
Tim Sullivan is a neighbor who used to visit the family's home and recently saw the boy with a shaved head. But he and other neighbors say Nguyen never asked them for money.
"If that was my son -- I'd be going to my neighbors if they could help me, and if they did that, I'd reach into my wallet to help them," he said.
That's what classmates and parents did at Rolling Hills Elementary. Students donated quarters and paid extra to wear a hat to school and teachers paid to wear jeans. They raised $25,000 since September and held a 5k race.
Police say upon raiding her home more than $23,000 was found. They also say a lot of the donation money was used towards a Disneyland Trip. No word yet on what kind of charges Nguyen will be facing.
