CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 16-year-old boy faces attempted murder charges after allegedly beating another boy, 15, who refused to join a gang Sunday morning.

About 2:30 a.m., the 16-year-old and "several other offenders" hit, stabbed and robbed the 15-year-old in the 2700 block of South Homan Avenue after he refused to join the gang, police said. The 15-year-old was then put in a dumpster and later taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, police said.

The 16-year-old was charged as a juvenile with attempted first-degree murder, kidnapping, robbery, battery and gang recruitment of a minor, police said.

At a hearing Monday, Judge Patricia Mendoza found probably cause to hold the 16-year-old in custody and set a next court date for April 14, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Stephen Campbell said.

Authorities are not releasing his name because of his age.
