The fire began around 2 a.m. Monday morning at the motel on 780 Flying Cloud Drive. Chanhassen and Eden Prairie fire departments had the fire under control around 2:30 a.m.

The cabin-style motel provides residents with low-income housing, and there are working smoke detectors in the units, but Chanhassen Fire Chief John Wolff said there were no sprinklers, and those sprinklers may have made all the difference.

A neighbor told Fox 9 News the victim claimed by the fire was in his 80s and had lived at the Brookside Motel for about 15 years.

The cause of the fire is unknown and the Carver County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal are currently investigating.
