Heron Avenue in Oakdale, MI is of those streets where neighbors live and actually enjoy spending time with one another.
Residents say, "You can always count on your neighbor to be there."
For the past six years some of these neighbors like Chuck Paulson, formed a dinner group and became good friends.
"We would move from house to house and end with a dessert," explains Paulson.
But last April, Chuck and his neighbor Melvin Freeman had to get even closer. Melvin needed a kidney transplant and chuck offered to help.
Paulson recalls, "I went to my wife first, and said I'm thinking about doing this. What do you think? Her reaction was, if you don't I will."
Kidneys help remove waste from the blood and make urine.
Melvin's were barely functioning.
The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network shows nearly 100,000 are waiting for a kidney in this country.
So after multiple tests and months of waiting for results, doctors finally told Chuck, he matched.
On last Tuesday, the men went into HCMC for the transplant surgery and it was a success.
They released Chuck just a few days later.
He says it was all part of a higher calling.
I went into it truly believing that god wasn't done with me yet," says Paulson.
And Sunday they finally let Melvin leave the hospital.
As the family made their way back onto Heron Ave and into their driveway, these shiny balloons were waiting courtesy of good neighbors.
"I told him when he was going to give me the kidney, you are now my brother," says Freeman.
