There have been 9 suspected arson fires at the Heidelberg project in the last 10 months and so far no arrests. The well known Party Animal House was the latest to go up in flames on Mt. Elliot and Elba on Detroit's east side. It was a favorite among children in particular because it was covered with dolls and stuffed animals. Volunteers braved the clod to comb through the rubble and start clearing away debris. Armed with work boots, rakes and gloves, the motto of the day was "teamwork makes the dream work."

"We are believers in things happening for a reason," said volunteer Paul Funk. "Hopefully karma will reach out to the person [who's setting the fires]."

"This is actually much bigger than the cleanup," added Heidelberg Project curator Lisa Rodriguez. "It is the first phase of any good art that's about to be assembled."

A similar cleanup took place at the Penny House Friday with volunteers from George Washington University. Supporters of the Heidelberg Project have raised more than $50,000 to increase security in the hopes of catching the fire bug and protecting what's left. There was a surveillance camera near the scene of the latest fire but it was damaged by the intense heat.
