Nearly a year after brutal Arizona murder, suspect pleads guilty

Posted: Updated:

Last spring, Becky Kasper, was brutally killed while going to school in Arizona. Now the suspect has made a surprise move and has pleaded guilty. Since the day Dan Kasper learned his daughter was killed, he was confident the man accused of her murder, Luis Soltero would at least face life behind bars.

"This case was originally intended to be a death penalty case," said Kasper about the settlement conference. "The reasons they cites was there was perhaps a history of mental illness and lack of criminal history."

Kasper was found brutally beaten on April 23rd in Soltero's apartment. Her face beyond recognition in an apartment bathtub, handcuffed, covered in blankets and coffee grounds. Soltero was accused of first degree premeditated murder, kidnapping and sexual assault. The father says the two had broken up around the first of April.

Unsigned notes near Kasper's body said she died days earlier with handwriting matches Soltero's writing said "I did not treat her right, she deserved better but never accepted it. So I had to make the choice for her."

Last week, Soltero pled guilty to amended 2nd degree murder, kidnapping and vulnerable adult abuse charges. He agreed to 25 years flat time, which is the minimum he'll spend in prison without release for any reason.

"I'm not really sure what you call closure," Kasper said. "The result now is Becky is still gone. This doesn't bring her back."
