Police Search For Suspect In Boulevard Rite Aid Robbery

Posted: Updated:

"Everyday is a robbery somewhere," said Tahira Mohammed who said she isn't shocked to hear the Rite Aid on the 8100-block of the Boulevard had been robbed.

"It goes on everyday now. You don't hear anything good anymore," she said.

Police say around 4:00 Friday afternoon a man came into the store posing as a customer. He asked a manager for help finding a birthday card but really he wanted something else.

"As soon as she went into the card aisle, he said to her in a nice calm voice, I have a gun don't make a noise we're going to go get the money," said Captain George Fuchs with Philadelphia Police. Police say the suspect had a plastic bag and followed the manager to two safes in the store where they say he forced her to empty both. When the manager said the second safe had a timer on it, police say in a shocking move, the man patiently waited.

"He told her let's go. Put the code in. So she put the code in and they actually stood back there 15 minutes until the timer went off," said Captain Fuchs. Before leaving, the suspect allegedly had the workers empty the front cash registers and then demanded goods.

"He says hey do me a favor if you're not busy give me 5 packs of these cigarettes and those cigarettes. So he wound up getting an undisclosed amount of cigarettes," said police.

Police are reviewing surveillance video from inside and outside the store that captured shots of the suspect. They say he said he had a gun but never showed one. He reportedly got away with several thousand dollars in cash.
