Wine drinkers rejoice! Michigan's BYOW law now in effect

Posted: Updated:

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- Wine drinkers rejoice. You can now bring your own vino to Michigan bars and restaurants.

Beginning Friday, March 14, House Bill 5046 allows restaurants and bars that already have liquor licenses to allow consumers to bring in their own bottles of wine. Hotels and resorts are exempt from the new rule.

The measure could help Michigan's wine industry by allowing consumers to bring local bottles, Scott Ellis, executive director of the Michigan Licensed Beverage Association, told MLive.com back in December.

It's important to call ahead, however, if you plan to bring your vino. Under the law, businesses can set their own corkage fee which can amount to $25. Restaurants can also bar customers from bringing wine they stock, or they can opt out all together.

Customers can also take their unfinished bottle home with them as long as it's capped.
