HARPER WOODS, Mich. (WJBK) -

One person died in an accident along I-94 near Vernier Thursday morning.

Police say a 31-year-old man's car broke down, leaving him in a dangerous spot. Harper Woods Police Chief Jim Burke explains the shoulders of the interstate had not been plowed yet so the driver could not remove the stalled vehicle completely from the roadway.

A garbage truck did not see the vehicle and slammed into it, ejecting the other driver.

The accident happened around 6 a.m. A portion of the interstate was closed for about six hours.

The garbage truck's driver was not injured. He has worked for Rizzo Environmental Services for more than 10 years. A spokesperson says the company's thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim, and that the company is fully cooperating with authorities.

The name of the victim has not yet been released.
