Happy ending for abandoned dog

Posted: Updated:
LOS ANGELES -

The story of an abandoned dog has a happy ending after the sick Dachshund made headlines around the country.

The elderly dog had been left, wrapped up in a blanket, inside a basket, at a Los Angeles-area animal shelter. The unsigned note with him said he belonged to an elderly couple, who'd had him all his life.

'Otto' was sick, the note explained, and they no longer had money to care for him or to put him to sleep.

The shelter turned Otto over to Leave No Paws Behind, a rescue group who nursed him back to health.  A photo of the heartbreaking note made the rounds on Facebook when the group began looking for his owners.

The elderly couple saw the story on FOX 11 in Los Angeles and reached out to Leave No Paws Behind. Now, they'll be getting Otto back -- with a pledge for ongoing help from the rescue group.

"I can't believe it, it's overwhelming," the dog's owner told FOX via phone.  "It's God's work, to let people know that there is help out there!"
