Delaware County Teacher Accused of Sexual Contact With Students

Posted: Updated:

A second grade teacher in Delaware County is accused of having sexual contact with some of his students.

53-year-old Paul Hochschwender faces nine sex related charges.

Hochschwender's profile on the Darby Township School website says he's been a teacher for 19 years and authorities say he's been with the Southeast Delaware County School District for the past 9.

On Wednesday he faced a judge right across the street from his school, where the alleged offenses took place.

A handcuffed Paul Hochschwender refused to answer questions while police walked him out the courthouse.

Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan said the second grade teacher fondled three children inside Darby Township School, right in front of other students. He said there could be more victims.

"We believe that two additional victims have come forward. Similar Modus operandi, similar description of what is occurring and we believe there could be even," Whelan said.

Whelan said two seven year old girls came forward last week.

Court documents said Hochschwender's third victim, who was 12 at the time, reported an incident to the school two years ago, giving a written statement to the principal.

The DA said those allegations didn't come to light until now, and that principal has since left the school.

"We are continuing to investigate whether or not any administrators at the school had knowledge of this and failed to report it two years ago," Whelan said.

That revelation doesn't sit well with the school's parents.

"I can't believe that, I can't believe that. So yeah I will consider sending my kid someplace else," parent Carol Cella said.

Parents said they were given a letter from the school saying a teacher was placed on administrative leave due to allegations of possible misconduct.

"We didn't find out who it was until today when it broke on the news. We're just really upset about what happened," parent Fran Reardon said.

Dana Lynn Fennell said her son had him in 7th grade.

"I'm not really that surprised. To be honest with you, I'm not surprised at all. I always thought he was a little strange," Fennell said.

Hochschwender went home after posting 10 percent of his $100,000 bond. His attorney is now preparing a defense for the father of two.

"What we will be doing is analyzing the facts as they're alleged and analyzing the law and making appropriate decisions on how to go forward," Arthur Donato said.

Now some parents are questioning where they're sending their children to school.

"My son never had him, but I don't like him being anywhere around any kind of pedophile whatsoever," Cella said.

Authorities said this investigation is far from over, and they will look for evidence on Hochschwender's computer and cell phone. They also plan to reach out to other schools where he has worked.

The school district did not return our phone calls.
