PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

You'd think putting a fresh coat of paint on your house would win you some points in your neighborhood but not for one couple in Ahwatukee.

They're now in trouble with their HOA not for painting their house a different color but for re-painting their house the same color that had been approved by the board ten years ago.

This all started when an Ahwatukee couple got a letter from their HOA saying they needed to repaint their cinder block wall along the sidewalk.  They figured while they were at it they'd repaint their house the same color to spruce it up.

What they failed to do is get the approval of the HOA and that could end up costing them thousands of dollars.

"We thought we were doing a good thing it just turned into a bad thing," said Anna Johnson.

Anna Johnson and her husband Johnny just paid over $6,000 to have their Ahwatukee home re painted the same color as when it was last painted ten years ago and that landed them in big trouble with their homeowners association.

"It needed to be painted. So I was trying to fix it. So it wasn't like I was trying to mess with the HOA I just wanted to be proactive and not have them mess with me and it just ended up blowing up in my face," said Johnson.

But rules of the Ahwatukee Board of Management, the HOA for the Johnson's neighborhood, require homeowners to apply for approval at least two weeks before they plan on painting even if painting the same colors. That's something the Johnson's say they didn't know and didn't expect there would be an issue since it is not a new paint scheme.

"They say well what if it's not approved now? But I'm not seeing it as house that's pink and purple I'm seeing it as a standard, desert in line with the houses in the rest of the neighborhood," said Johnson.

Anna Johnson says in the 24 years they've lived in the home they've only had minor issues with their HOA.

"Overall our neighborhood is a really wonderful neighborhood and our HOA cares about it," said Johnson.

Now the Johnson's are left waiting to find out the fate of their new paint job. "So I don't know what's going to happen now. I now that I don't have another sixty-four hundred dollars to pay more," she said.

FOX10 talked with a representative from the HOA earlier tonight who told me it's pretty simple, they have rules for a reason and that's the whole point of an HOA.

They also say colors are trends so just because something was approved ten years ago doesn't it mean it will be approved today.

Anna Johnson says it's a good reminder for other homeowners. Look at the rules very carefully before doing anything to the outside of your home.
