EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (KMSP) -

Police say the case began with a man who was brutally beaten in the locker room of the Lifetime Fitness gym in Eden Prairie -- but charging documents claim that's far from where the violence ended.

Many have wondered how Dalal Bayle Idd and Kamal Elyas Maqadin were able to get into the health club in the first place -- and the answer is simple: They walked in just like everyone else. They only difference is that they didn't stop to check in because they weren't there to work out.

Lifetime Fitness members know that they must check in to work out, which is why the staff at the crosstown location was shocked when Idd and Maqadin passed the front desk and headed straight for the men's locker rooms.

"The early indication is that the two individuals did not heed the warning of our front desk staff to stop," Jason Thunstrom said. "They simply went right by."

After their arrest, Idd and Maqadin told officers they entered the fitness club with the intent to rob someone. In fact, Idd even admitted to punching a man 5-6 times. When helped arrived, the victim was nearly unconscious and had suffered a broken nose and numerous cuts to his face.

"It's pretty brazen," Thunstrom said. "Here's a case where two individuals obviously had a calculated plan about what they intended to do, and they didn't care what security measures were in place."

Police caught up with the duo while investigating another beating on the north side of town. In that case, a man was assaulted after he confronted the two in his garage.

"I think it's just -- we're vulnerable," Patti Harrell said. "We're families here, and I think that it was a crime of opportunity."

Idd, 18, now faces three counts of first-degree assault and burglary while Maqadin, 26, faces a single count of aggravated robbery. Both were arrested after a witness saw them walking toward an apartment after the second attack.

Many Eden Prairie residents expressed concern that the attacks took place where most people expect to be safe, but all are grateful the suspects are now behind bars and their victims are expected to recover.

There's a big misconception about food vendors at the Minnesota State Fair. Many people think you can set up a booth, work 12 days and make a pile of cash. But it's not that easy. Aside from a lot of hard work, it also takes some luck.
