ROGERS, Minn. (KMSP) -

Helicopters and officers from multiple agencies headed to Rogers, Minn., on Tuesday to try and locate the source of a water main break impacting the water supply there.

The search began after alarms began to sound that a large amount of water was going out of the city's system, but officials couldn't find where it was going. After searching everything from subdivisions to new construction sites, crews reached out for help.

Sgt. Jesse Grabow, of the Minnesota State Patrol, confirmed the agency's chopper was sent to the community, which is located about 25 miles northwest of Minneapolis. In the end, the helicopter's vantage point isolated the break area.

At 3:40 p.m., Rogers police confirmed there was a break on Rogers Drive behind the Camping World store, and Fox 9 News found water gushing in a wooded area nearby.

Rogers Public Works representatives confirmed about a half dozen businesses nearby are affected by the break, and bathroom use won't be possible until repairs are made.

"Water main breaks are pretty common in the winter freeze-thaw cycle. With the frost going in and out of the ground, it moves the soil around and if there's a weak spot in the water main, it finds it," John Seifert said.

Several million gallons of water were lost, and crews are currently trying to turn off the water. Repairs are expected to take about 3 hours once that happens.

Residents with questions are urged to contact the city of Rogers at 763-428-2253.
