First hearing on Safe and Supportive Minnesota Schools Act

Posted: Updated:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

The Safe and Supportive Minnesota Schools Act will get its first committee hearing of the year on Tuesday.

The controversial anti-bullying legislation is designed to make students feel safer at school and address the root causes of bullying.

The bill has been the target of religious right and Tea Party groups because of its protection for lesbian and gay students. Some school district administrators are also criticizing the bill, saying it would be expensive for schools to implement and it takes away local control.

Republican state senators announced the Stamp Out Bullying bill on Monday, which is modeled after legislation that's been successful in other states. The Republican bill allows school districts to maintain local control of its policies.
