Injured Detroit firefighter says no to treatment because 'city's not paying the bills'

DETROIT (WJBK) -- A Detroit firefighter kept working after being injured while falling through the floor of a burning home on the city's east side.

Scott Kasinec tells WWJ-AM that his helmet came off during the fall Tuesday morning and he might have been badly hurt if it weren't for his safety equipment. He landed on his feet and, after being helped out by fellow firefighters, continued to fight the blaze.

Kasinec used a ladder handed down by fellow firefighters to get out of the home.

Kasinec, a 20-year veteran, refused to go to the hospital for treatment on his minor cuts and burns because he's afraid the city won't pay the bill. "The city's not paying the bills," said Kasinec. "I have an $800 medical bill now as is that the city won't pay."

Alexis Wiley, spokesperson for Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, says the city paid the bill in full in October and Kasinec received unpaid bill notices in error. She adds, if a worker is injured on the job the city will take care of 100 percent of the costs, including the co-pay.

Detroit Fire Union President Jeffrey Pegg says hospitals in the past have not received payments from the city and, consequently, injured firefighters were stuck with the bills. Pegg says the payment would later be resolved but, sources say, only after the bill was handed over to a collection agency.

Wiley says after the city filed bankruptcy many payments stopped but picked up again in October, and the city has been paying its medical bills since then.

The city is also urging employees to report unpaid medical bills for work related injuries.

The home on Gunson Street was destroyed by the fire. The cause of the blaze is under investigation, but sources say the fire was set intentionally.
