LUV FOR LULU: 2-time leukemia fighter meets Miley Cyrus

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

With a bit of determination, some amazing things can happen -- and that's very true for a Minnesota girl who got to meet Miley Cyrus after her sister started a Facebook campaign to make her dream a reality.

Fox 9 News first introduced Alexis Martinez two weeks ago, which is when the Luv for Lulu campaign kicked off. At the time, meeting the singing star was just an idea wrapped in hope. On Monday, Martinez's hopes were realized before the concert at the Xcel Energy Center.

"I just like that she's not scared to be herself," Martinez said of her musical idol.

Martinez, known as Lulu to her loved ones, admits she wasn't feeling well on Monday afternoon, but she certainly had something to lift her spirits. She, along with nine of her closest friends and family members, got to meet Miley Cyrus.

"Screaming, short of breath," she recalled.

Martinez thought she had beat cancer when she was 9 years old, but earlier this year, doctors informed her the leukemia was back again. At the time, Lulu worried she wouldn't be able to use the tickets her parents bought her for her birthday because her health was compromised -- and that's when her sister stepped in and set up Luv for Lulu.

With more than 6,000 Facebook 'likes' and some help from a local radio station, the campaign came to a successful end.

"It feels really good. Me and her classmate really worked really hard to make this happen," Brittany Martinez said. "When I found out -- when the radio station called and said we had 10 tickets in the suite -- I was, like, balling on the phone. They couldn't understand me."

Before going on stage, the pop princess hung out with the group and posed for pictures even though Lulu worried she might lose her lunch.

"I wasn't feeling good and I was like, 'Oh my gosh. I'm going to meet Miley Cyrus and I'm going to puke -- and she's going to remember me as the girl that puked," she remembered. "But I didn't puke! I was all good."

As it turned out, the singing starlet wasn't feeling too well herself. The Martinez family told Fox 9 News that the celebrity had a sore throat but was still kind, polite and seemed like a regular person.

"I will probably brag about it at school until I graduate -- and then after I get married too," Alexis Martinez said.

The group also gave Miley Cyrus a bracelet and T-shirt from the Love for Lulu campaign.
