DPS launches 'Parent University' program, fast-tracks employment

DETROIT (WJBK) -

Parent University classes began at Detroit Public Schools Monday. The semester of classes earns the parents a "Parent Leader" certification.

Twenty classes are offered. All are two hours long and begin March 10 and end May 23.

"The main thing they're offering parents is workshops that we can get into that we can learn and get more knowledge of how to treat your kids, how to feed your kids, you know, after school resources," says parent Cordette Grantling.

Kenneth Chapman has already seen success stories from the time he spent with parents like Grantling.

"A parent is always the child's first teacher. So, if you equip your children early to better prepare them when they're getting ready to go to school, they already have the tools needed to be successful," Chapman says.

DPS even offers fast-track courses to immediate employment in food service and/or gardening.

"The most exciting part of this that we just announced today is that we're going to be able to offer employment opportunities for our parents, to be able to apply for jobs in our own DPS schools," says Jennifer Mrozowski from DPS.
