Tech Check: Smartphone memory hogs

Posted: Updated:

Does your smartphone have too much junk in the trunk? Are photos, video, music and other files taking up way too much memory?

Then you might just need some tips on putting your memory hog on a diet.

Mindi Sewel with the iHospital says the ultimate tip in freeing up memory for a device is to delete old MMS messages that have photos.

The docs at Atlanta's iHopsital say just like when you put a few pounds on, you get out of shape, so too does your smart device. When your device's memory is packed to its limit, its performance suffers.

So, what hogs memory? Photos, video, music and apps are the biggest hogs. So, what do you do? Move this stuff to the Cloud and get it off your device.

For photos, you can try Shutterfly. The company has been around for a long time and they offer free, unlimited storage. Plus, you can get prints and nifty gifts such as customized iPhone cases using your photos.

There are also storage sites for your videos. Of course there's YouTube. Another is Vimeo.

As for music, rather than store you music on your device, you can keep it in the Cloud on both Apples and Android devices. You can also try streaming music services such as Pandora, Slacker or Spotify. Spotify now allows free users to create playlist of their favorite songs and artistes that can be played whenever they want without any charges.

No matter what you're storing, there are some great apps. Google Drive, Microsoft Skydrive, Box and Drop Box are among just a few.
