Hunter Admits To Dumping Mutilated Bobcat In Vacant Lot

Posted: Updated:
NORTH PHILADELPHIA -

We know more about how an animal's mutilated body ended up in a vacant lot in North Philadelphia.

That lot is at 30th and Jefferson streets in Brewerytown.

Officials now say the animal was a bobcat.

A hunter from New York turned himself into the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals on Monday morning, saying he shot and killed the animal in the Catskill Mountains. He contacted authorities when he saw the story on the news.

People passing by located the skinned cat Sunday. They were in complete shock and disgust.  The animal was found with its skin, paws, and ears completely removed. It was mutilated to the point that it was unrecognizable to those who initially found it.

The SPCA Shelter at 350 E. Erie street examined the animal and determined it was in the feline family.

The tools used to mutilate the creature were discovered along with the paws in a blanket in the same lot.

"This is an utmost heinous crime," Director of Humane Law Enforcement George Bengal said after the discovery. "We are working hard to uncover the facts and locate the offender."

There's no word yet on why the hunter dumped the bobcat here. He faces a dumping violation.
