Police: Mother, abducted 5-year-old son found safe in Owatonna

BELLE PLAINE, Minn. (KMSP) -

The search for a 5-year-old boy who was believed to have been abducted by his non-custodial mother ended on Sunday afternoon when the pair were found in Owatonna.

According to Scott County law enforcement, 5-year-old Nolen Joseph May-Schmitz was found safe and will be returned to his father. His mother, 29-year-old Nichole Marie May was arrested by Owatonna police without incident. 

"While this entire situation has been frightening for so many people," said Scott County Chief Deputy Dean Opatz, "We're relieved that the immediate crisis has been resolved without further conflict."

The search began after May fled her court-ordered, supervised visitation appointment on Saturday with her son just before 4 p.m.

A felony warrant was issued for her arrest Sunday afternoon. Judge Rex Stacey issued the warrant on the charge of "deprivation of parental rights," police said. A request was also submitted to the FBI to issue a fugitive alert.

"While we do not believe that Nolen is in any physical danger, this abduction is still a crime.  Several law enforcement agencies, including the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, are continuing to follow up on any and all leads in the case," Belle Plaine Police Chief Thomas Stolee said.

The Minnesota BCA said May had not been to her home in Montgomery since the crime alert was released Saturday night.

The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with additional information regarding the abduction is urged to call the tip line at 952-496-8423.
