PLYMOUTH, Mich. (WJBK) -

A western Michigan high school athlete was found dead unexpectedly Friday morning, just hours before the co-captain would have led his team into the MHSAA semifinal ice hockey tournament.

Medical officials say Ryan Fischer, 17, died of an enlarged heart, according to a FOX 17 report.

Ryan attended Grandville High school, which is about 10 miles southwest of Grand Rapids. He was reportedly the co-captain of the hockey team, a captain for the football team and was on the basketball team.

The Fisher family urged the hockey game to continue on to the tournament game Friday night, which was held in Plymouth against Detroit Catholic Central.

Number 11 decals were made for both teams to wear on their helmets during the game. Ryan wore jersey #11.

FOX 2's Andrea Isom was at the game.
