Soldier Reunites With Partner In Heartwarming Homecoming

Posted: Updated:

It took several years but Sergeant Harvey Holt was finally able to adopt his K-9 partner J-Jackson.

Dozens of people lined the streets of Bloomfield, Indiana Thursday to welcome home the town's newest war hero.

Holt, an Iraq war veteran, says when he was overseas, he made a promise to J-Jackson.

If the two made it out alive, Holt would adopt the dog and give him a good home the rest of his life.

After a lot of paperwork and help from the community, Holt was able to keep his promise.

The k-9 is a little banged up and will need surgery, but Holt is certain he will be able to provide for his best friend.

"They're just meant to be together. They've been apart for so long and he's being retired now and he needs to be with his partner," said Marcy Vandeventer of Bloomfield State Bank.

"I'm shaking now. I still can't wait to get him home and have a one-on-one time with him," said Holt. "When I first saw him coming out of the kennels I didn't even recognize him. He was a young pup when I gave him up and he's an old chunky man now."

Harvey's wife Debra says J-Jackson will be spoiled and "one of the babies."

"He made a promise to him when he was in the services and now I know he'll sleep better; sleep a lot better knowing he's finally able to fulfill that," Deborah said.

There's a homes for heroes fund set up in Holt's name. If you would like to make a donation, you can go to any Bloomfield State Bank Branch.
