AIR QUALITY: The downside of the warm-up

We all like a good warm up, but the rise in temperature does not always come without it's share of problems. We will worry about flooding a bit later, but for now its fog, slick roads and bad air at the top of our minds. Yes, bad air, and event that most of us associate with the hot steamy days in the middle of summer.

The spring thaw actually creates an idea set up for the formation of bad air, or at least a build up of pollutants. It's a simple process and a process that could be around until all the snow is gone, and that may take a while.

When a warmer air mass moves in over the cold snow pack, it can actually be warmer up above than at the surface. The snowpack acts as a coolant of the air at the surface. The warm air aloft acts like a lid that allows for the build up of all types of pollutants, such as car emissions, dust, smoke, etc. Therefore, the air never clears sort of speak, and the air quality goes down the tubes.
