Midday Sunday With Tony Valdez

Deaf Awareness Day

Posted: Updated:

Today's program focuses on the needs of the ten million Americans who are hard of hearing, and a million Americans who are deaf.

Today's guest is Dr. Patricia Hugues, the Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness, Inc. GLAD's mission is to ensure equal access of the deaf and hard of hearing community to the same opportunities afforded their hearing counterparts. The organization's general purposes and powers are directed around the promotion of the social, recreational, cultural, educational, and vocational well-being of its deaf and hard of hearing constituents.

To foster more understanding that spans social, cultural and economic factors in the greater Southern California region, GLAD is sponsoring the local observance of International Deaf Awareness Day on April 12 at its campus in Eagle Rock.

Information about the Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness, Inc. is available at its website, www.gladinc.org

The telephone and TTY number is (323) 478-8000.

Of all the world's religions, Buddhism is one of the most mysterious and most intriguing to many Americans. The books The Dharma Bums, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and even If You Meet the Buddha on the Road, Kill Him!, are all examples of how Buddhist concepts are part of the American cultural landscape.

For another glance of summertime fun, peer in as we spend some time at Pelican Pier in Long Beach with three pretty little girls! As they go around on the merry-go-round, you may start to think you’re seeing double … but you’re not. Chelsey and Airess (2010) are twins and came dressed alike in pink while younger sister Shayna (2012) came dressed for comfort in baby blue.
