Mother Gives Birth While Battling Breast Cancer

Posted: Updated:

It was supposed to be one of the happiest moments of Sarah Erzen's life—giving birth to her third child. Little did she know her pregnancy and the birth of her daughter would end up saving her life.

Erzen, 35, said she found a lump in her breast while she was pregnant. She said her doctors told her not to worry about because it was probably nothing.

She said she could tell something wasn't right, so at 21 weeks, she went back to the doctor. "We got a referral and had I biopsy and I found out at that time it was stage three," said Erzen.

The cancer had already spread to Erzen's lymph nodes by the time she discovered it.

"We offered her the option of having chemotherapy and delaying the surgery so that she might be a candidate for having breast conserving surgery," said Dr. David Nathanson, Director of Breast Care at Henry Ford Hospital. In breast conserving surgery, doctors don't have to remove the breast.

No surgery, chemotherapy or radiation is done during the first trimester of pregnancy, said Dr. Nathanson, because it's just too dangerous. Once it was safe, Erzen had four successful rounds of chemo without any trauma to the baby.

On Thursday, Erzen gave birth to Adeline Faith. At just eight pounds, 12 ounces, she's too young to understand exactly what she has done for her family, but she should be a reminder to everyone to trust your gut, listen to your body and don't stop until you find a doctor who will listen.

Erzen will now undergo intense surgery ,more chemo, a bilateral mastectomy and then radiation.
