Tommy John surgeon Frank Jobe dies

Posted: Updated:

The man who developed the Tommy John surgery has died at the age of 88. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Frank Jobe invented the transplant procedure in 1974 after Dodger pitcher Tommy John heard his arm snap after throwing a pitch.

Jobe transplanted a tendon from John's right wrist into his left elbow to serve as a new ligament. The surgery which is considered a big step in sports medicine has been performed thousands of times in the years since.

Former Twins Francisco Liriano, Joe Nathan have had the surgery as will prospect Miguel Sano. Sano injured his right elbow while completing drills during spring training.
