PHILADELPHIA -

The mayor shows a lot of emotion when the subject of "libraries".

He proposed giving them more money, so some can stay open six- day week.

Mayor Michael Nutter said, "I have a very deep and personal appreciation for library services."

In 2008, there were protests when the mayor trimmed funding for the libraries.

At the time he says the decision was necessary to deal with the recession.

His new budget will restore the funding, which means 39 libraries could go back to being open 6-day a week.

Some other points of the mayor's budget were an increased investment in city parks, recreation centers, and L&I inspectors. His plan to raise money through the sale of the city owned Philadelphia gas works was roundly criticized by protesters.

More importantly, that pending PGW sale lacks city council support.

When the union members protested last year, they disrupted the annual budget address by shouting at mayor.

This year there were some city union members were protesting outside, but they didn't go in to the meeting.
