CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The former Olympic amputee buried his head in his hands as he listened to witnesses describe the night his girlfriend was shot and killed.

Oscar Pistorius became emotional in court as his neighbor recounted the moments after he found Reeva Steenkamp shot in Pistorius' home.

Johan Stipp said that the celebrated athlete was crying and praying at his girlfriend's side as she laid dead or dying.

"I remember the first thing he said when I got there was that, he said 'I shot her.' I thought she was a burglar and I shot her," Stipp said.

Stipp testified Pistorius was trying to help Steenkamp breathe by holding two fingers in her clenched mouth.

"Oscar was crying all the time. He prayed to god to please let her live, 'she must not die'. He said at one stage while he was praying that he will dedicate his life and her life to god if she would just only live and not die that night," said Stipp

Prosecutors argue there was a fight between the couple and Pistorius killed Steenkamp intentionally. However, Pistorius claims the killing was accidental because he thought there was an intruder in the house.

Three witnesses have now testified that they heard a woman screaming in Pistorius' home before gunshots rang out.

"When it's deathly quiet at three o'clock in the morning, I do believe that I heard a lady screaming," said Stipp.

The defense team said the screams actually came from Pistorius, who was crying for help. They've been trying to cast doubt on the witnesses' recollection of events following the shooting.

Stipp's testimony was the first public, detailed account of what happened in the moments after the shooting.
