BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. (KMSP) -

Police are commending the Brooklyn Park school bus driver who safely evacuated four students -- two of whom were in wheelchairs -- after an electrical fire broke out on the vehicle on Thursday morning.

Dash-cam video of the fire underscores just how remarkable it is that the driver, a nurse and all students on board were able to escape safely.

Officials who have dubbed the bus driver a hero for his quick actions say he attempted to douse he flames with a fire extinguisher while firefighters were en route. In fact, the veteran driver, Alfred Lewis, got everyone off the bus safely before crews arrived.

Witnesses told Fox 9 News it only took minutes for the electrical fire release pitch black smoke and flames, which engulfed the bus on the 7800 block of Yates Avenue.

The bus, which was operated by Cincinnati-based First Student, was transporting students with special needs to Elm Creek Elementary School in Maple Grove at the time of the incident. School officials arranged for a new bus to arrive and take the students to their classes.
