SPRING BREAK: 9 ways to prevent a burglary while you're away

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (KMSP) -

It's March and that means spring break for school districts in Minnesota

Eden Prairie police have a list of tips, precautions and reminders to keep you from becoming part of this year's crime statistics while you're out of town.

WHILE YOU'RE AWAY

1. SOCIAL SILENCE: Don't mention your absence on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or other social media, and don't post photos while you're still on vacation.

2. DOUBLE-CHECK: Make sure all doors and windows are locked, including the door between your home and garage.

3. LIGHT UP: Use motion-sensing lights near entrances to your home or make sure standard outdoor lights near entrances are left on.

4. SET TIMERS: On lights, radios and TVs to create the illusion someone is in the home.

5. HOLD THE MAIL: Place a hold on mail and newspaper delivery.

6. CLEAR THE SNOW: Arrange for someone to shovel your driveway and sidewalk, if necessary.

7. HIDE YOUR STUFF: Don't keep valuables in your bedroom (where burglars go first). Instead, keep valuables in an unlikely place.

8. TRIM BUSHES: Overgrown shrubs near entrances or windows can provide a hiding place for a burglar to quickly smash a window or door.

9. NOTIFY NEIGHBORS: Let them know you will be away from your home and encourage them to call 911 if they see anything suspicious.

HOW SECURE IS YOUR HOME?

Check with your police department to see if they offer a home security survey. In Eden Prairie, the survey is free and provides a detailed assessment of your home's current security and tips to prevent a future burglary.
