Metrodome turf relocating to a Rochester high school thanks to donor

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KMSP) -

Athletes at a Rochester high school will soon have some extra bragging rights because they will be the only ones in the state to claim that their home field has ties to the former home of the Minnesota Vikings.

The Metrodome's artificial turf will soon have a new home at Mayo High School, but those who put the deal together are keeping the cost to themselves -- but buying and installing artificial turf can cost up to $800,000.

The Touchdown Club -- a group of alumni and supporters of the school's football team -- made the play that has the Spartans excited about training for next season, even if seeing the green artificial turf reminds them of how far away next season truly is.

"Ready for the season to start," Zach Robertson said. "Ready for the turf."

Since the Spartans first started playing in 1991, they have played on natural grass, which can pose an extra challenge during bad weather.

"There's been a couple of times where the grass has been torn up and covered in sawdust and stuff," Dan Jech told Fox 9 News.

For the past few years, the team has been trying to come up with a way to buy artificial turf.

"When it gets rainy and muddy, your feet start slipping," Ryan Burton lamented.

Many admit they never thought that dream would become a reality, but Athletic Director Jeff Whitney said it all came together a few weeks ago when a member of the Touchdown Club came to the school with a picture of the Metrodome turf all rolled up and said, "This is now yours."

"They found this unique way to get a hold of this piece of carpet and bring it here," Whitney said.

Soon, the school will be the first in the Rochester area to have artificial turf, and the history of the field already has the athletes in awe.

"I was amazed," Jech admitted. "I was stunned that we were going to be playing on a field pros were playing on."

Football, soccer and lacrosse teams will all share the field, and installation could be completed by August.
