Facebook cracks down on posts for illegal gun sales

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Go on Facebook or Instagram and you can find hundreds of guns to buy, from assault rifles like the AR-15, the weapon used to murder little kids in Newtown, to gun accessories like 30-shot clips illegal in New York and Connecticut. Some pages include sales come-ons for illegal actions like not doing a background check. Facebook was for some gun sellers a virtual black market.

Facebook and subsidiary Instagram changed that on Wednesday. Facebook will not post gun sales that offer no background checks, users must be 18 and will try to educate its users on what is legal.

This new policy was negotiated with the office of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

The action was the result of one month of petitioning from Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America made up of a huge Facebook segment: moms.

The gun lobbyists of the National Rifle Association on their web page seem to consider the Facebook regulations a victory. Noting their members would still be able to exercise their First Amendment right of free speech with Second Amendment freedom, the right to bear arms.

But gun sellers on Facebook were outraged considering the new modest regulations an attack on gun ownership.
