Curie stunned by DuSable in IHSA tournament

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago's Curie Metropolitan High School, which had its city championship snatched away because of academic irregularities, has had its hopes of taking an Illinois basketball title dashed.

Top-ranked Curie was bounced from the state tournament in an 88-85 overtime Class 4A regional semifinal loss Tuesday to DuSable High School.

Curie was forced to forfeit all of this season's wins because several players were academically ineligible to compete. Chicago Public Schools said seven players on Curie's 24-1 varsity team were ineligible from the start of the 2013-14 season.

However, because Curie has nine players on the 12-man roster who meet Illinois High School Association tournament rules, the organization allowed the school to play in the state tournament.

CPS lifted its suspension of Curie coach Mike Oliver. But two starters remained ineligible.
