General Mills announced Friday that testing for TCE vapor intrusion is nearly complete in the Como neighborhood, and the company has offered to outfit about two thirds of the properties with ventilation systems.

Out of the 182 properties in the original testing area, 166 homes have been sampled -- but only a third tested that were below the threshold for trichloroethylene set by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

So far, General Mills has offered to install vapor ventilation systems at 111 properties of the properties sampled. Those installations are currently being carried out, with 69 already done.

In an official release sent out on Friday, General Mills confirmed that it has asked for access to 128 new homes beyond the original test group.

Company representatives say that as the data collected progressed, they anticipated extending the search area. Already, 98 agreements have received and 76 properties have been sampled. Of those, only 17 have tested beyond the MPCA standards and they have been offered ventilation systems. The remainder -- excepting one where results are pending -- registered TCE levels below the threshold set by MPCA.

Representatives of General Mills, The MPCA and the Minnesota Department of Health will be available to meet area residents at an open house on March 25.

The testing has been underway since Nov. 7, when TCE vapors were found in the soil near an old General Mills facility where the industrial solvent was dumped in the 1940s through the 1960s, which was customary at the time.

Soil from the area was excavated and removed amid a cleanup, but groundwater was also contaminated. For 25 years, General Mills treated the water there.

In 2012, the MPCA asked General Mills to investigate whether TCE vapor had leeched from the contaminated groundwater into the soil. Samples taken last September found TCE on public land.
