LAKELAND (FOX 13) -

George Jenkins is a man who came from humble beginnings and built an empire. Now, there is a new film documenting his life called Mister George.

Jenkins built his first store in 1930 in Winter Haven during the Great Depression. There are now more than 1,000 Publix stores across the southeastern United States.

Along with business savvy, Jenkins was well known for his generosity. He figured out that for a business to be successful, employees (or "associates," as Publix calls them) have to be bought in. So Publix makes them co-owners in the business.

The company is also a cornerstone of the community and donates millions of dollars to local worthy projects.

The film was produced by the award winning company NFocus, which is located in Lakeland. It is narrated by Tom Selleck.

Mister George premiers at the Polk Theater Friday, March 7.
