Frozen water pipes plaguing Chicago-area

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Due to the prolonged winter and arctic temperatures, more and more Chicago homeowners are reporting problems with frozen pipes.

The city's water commissioner, Tom Powers, says the frost line in the ground is moving down and is close to where the water service lines which feed single family homes enter basements.

He says as a result of the frozen ground they're seeing an uptick in the number of frozen services across the city.

"So what we're asking people to do is if they have no water in their home, to please call 311. At that point, we'll send out an inspector to find out where the pipes are frozen," Powers said. "If they're frozen on the city side, then what we'll do is we will actually excavate in the street and then we'll send an electrical current from the pipe in the street through the front yard into the pipe where it comes up in the basement and that's how we thaw these frozen surfaces."

Powers says crews are working 24-hours a day, 7-days a week to try to re-establish water and alleviate the problems.
